From August 16, a new intelligent road traffic surveillance system will start operating in Northern Cyprus. According to the Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Erhan Arıklı, the project aims to improve road safety and simplify traffic regulation control, especially in tourist areas and places with heavy traffic.
The main goal is to make roads safer for both local residents and visitors to the island. The new system monitors traffic in real time and helps prevent violations before they lead to dangerous situations.
Modern cameras with a range of up to one kilometer and an automatic system for recognizing license plates, vehicle models, and colors will allow the police to respond promptly to road incidents. The data will be processed at the unified Holnet center, speeding up procedures and making them more transparent.
For tourists renting cars, simple and clear interaction mechanisms are being introduced: the system immediately links the vehicle to the renter, and if necessary, provides an easy way to pay fines before departure. This not only increases responsibility but also prevents unforeseen situations at the airport.
Currently, the system is in a testing phase, with the full launch scheduled for August 16. Until then, fines for violations recorded by the new cameras will not be enforced.
Authorities are confident that the new system will help make Northern Cyprus’s roads safer, and the stay more comfortable and calm for all road users.
